Het wordt doorgaans geleverd als platen of netten van thermoplastisch materiaal die met polyurethaan zijn gecoat, zodat ze gemakkelijker te hanteren en positioneren zijn. Deze materialen worden meestal zacht gemaakt in heet water en terwijl ze zacht zijn om de anatomie van de patiënt heen gemodelleerd. Wanneer het materiaal afkoelt, verhardt het tot een op maat gemaakte mal of afdruk van dat deel van het lichaam. Wanneer de mal klaar is, wordt deze doorgaans aan een bord, frame of ander patiëntpositioneringssysteem (PPS) of immobilisatiehulpmiddel bevestigd.
